Description

Amphilophus citrinellus is a large cichlid fish endemic to Costa Rica and Nicaragua in Central America. In the aquarium trade Amphilophus citrinellus is often sold under the trade name of midas cichlid or red devil. Colouration in wild stocks is variable and while most specimens are grey to olive brown some pink, yellow or orange specimens do occur. Amphilophus citrinellus are omnivorous and their diet consists of plant material, molluscs and smaller fish. The species is closely related to Amphilophus labiatus.
